Costed Bill of Materials Report
Built an interactive costed BOM reporting tool inside NetSuite that gives manufacturing teams full visibility into multi-level component hierarchies, cost rollups, real-time inventory metrics, and buildable quantities - with inline editing and Excel export.
Replaced manual BOM cost analysis with an interactive tool that surfaces cost breakdowns, inventory gaps, and production readiness in seconds.
Challenge
The client’s manufacturing team needed detailed cost visibility across their product assemblies. Each finished product has a deep component hierarchy - assemblies made of sub-assemblies made of parts - and understanding the true cost at every level required pulling data from multiple places in NetSuite and assembling it manually in spreadsheets.
On top of cost analysis, they needed real-time inventory insight: how many of each component are on hand, how many are committed to open work orders or sales orders, and most critically - how many finished units can actually be built with current stock. This “buildable quantity” calculation was being done by hand, and it was slow, error-prone, and outdated the moment it was finished.
They also needed the ability to search in reverse - given a specific component, find every assembly it’s used in - for impact analysis when a part changes or goes on backorder.
Solution
Built an interactive BOM reporting tool that lives inside NetSuite, giving the manufacturing and procurement teams a single interface for cost analysis, inventory planning, and component traceability.
Costed BOM Report
Users select an assembly item and the tool generates a full hierarchical breakdown showing every component at every level. For each item in the tree, it displays:
- Cost data - component cost, manufacturing cost (from routing operations), cost at the current BOM level, and cost rolled up to the top level
- Inventory metrics - on hand, available, on order, backordered, committed to work orders vs. sales orders
- Buildable quantity - how many finished units can be produced with current stock, calculated automatically from the limiting component
- Stock levels - preferred and safety stock with suggested build/order quantities
The report supports collapsible hierarchy with color-coded levels, configurable column visibility (20+ data columns), and inline editing of stock levels that persist directly back to NetSuite.
Bulk Reporting
For broader analysis, users can filter assemblies by a three-level product attribute hierarchy (e.g., Product Family, Variant, Size) and generate reports for an entire product line at once. The tool processes each matching assembly individually and shows batch progress.
Component Search
A reverse BOM lookup lets users search for a specific component and see every assembly it appears in - essential for understanding the impact when a part is delayed, discontinued, or needs a substitution.
Excel Export
All reports can be exported to Excel with proper row grouping that mirrors the BOM hierarchy, formatted headers, and optimized column widths - ready to share with stakeholders or use in planning meetings.
Result
The manufacturing team now has instant access to cost breakdowns and inventory readiness data that used to take hours to compile manually. The buildable quantity calculation alone eliminated a major bottleneck in production planning - teams can see at a glance which products are ready to build and which are waiting on components, without touching a spreadsheet.
